The idea of the exhibition is to promote emerging artists and new contemporary trends, by making art visible and accessible to the wider audience. The interesting part of the show is the freedom to select artworks from varied style and subjects, displaying landscapes, portraits, figurative compositions, abstracts and a collection of sketches. The range of artistic expression, ideas, themes, genres and experiments in materials and mediums suggest the constant shifts and changes that the contemporary art undergoes as artists take on new challenges.

Born in West Bengal and residing in Hyderabad, DebosmitaSamanta’s works are a rare blend of imaginative cadence, reality and painterly skills. Memories and personal experiences are the recurring themes in her works where the mundane day to day life, daily encounters appear with a far deeper meaning. The themes of her paintings are often depicted as a metaphor of familiar dreams and realities, as flora or fauna, or a food platter or motifs, characters, ancestors, and memories. The dominating murky backdrop of her works connotes deep psychological underpinnings; even varied emotions of a woman’s life are rightly revealed from the straight and pensive faces of the characters depicted in her works. Highlighting fantasies, memories and, self-reliance, her works are a blend of practices and learning of the past as well as the present with a notion of refinement and precision.
PratapMajumder’s works revolve around human emotions, societal changes, life struggles, migration, inner feelings and concerns about nature and the environment. The typicality of his style is the depiction of a portion of azure sky or a piece of land or water body painted as layers or patches to signify the territory of self. Whether as a construction site where a building shown emerging supported by scaffoldings, or a person holding his baggage on the head while balancing himself on a juggler’s rope, his compositions suggest the emerging challenges that have been brought by rapid urbanization and mindless consumerism.
A practising artist and teacher Sriparna Dutta works with varied mediums including fabrics which are a favourite medium of her artistic expression. Her works are mostly autobiographical which outline her journey, emotional ebbs and flows and realities of life. Apart from cotton, threads and laces, she utilizes burnt surfaces, splashes of colours (mostly red) which symbolize death, violence, anguish and pain, whereas her embroideries signify beauty and life as a parallel statement against death and hopelessness. She deliberately uses discarded or used cloths collected from her close family and friends believing that they carry the presence of a person to whom they belong to as stains of sweat or body smell. In her works, pillows and quilts are represented as a companion or a witness of life, also as a marker of intimate emotions, memories and sufferings. A versatile in techniques, she uses a red-hot iron press to burn the surface to depict wounds and scars or a site of cremation or loss. Female centric themes or the ‘self’ appears with a wider meaning in her works where a woman is symbolically depicted as a floral vaginal form seating atop a sanitary pad.
Trained at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan and living and working in Hyderabad, TapsiNath has expertise in utilizing stitching and appliqué works in a very personalized language to depict subjects culled from day-to-day life. The subjects and motifs depicted in her works are part of her daily chores suggesting her involvement towards re-thinking and re-constructing the psychological, physical and emotional being. Minimal colours and pale bases of her stitches are drawn towards graceful simplicity.
PiuMahapatra, artist, writer, art-consultant and curator, divides her time between India and the United States while engaging herself in researching, writing and painting. Her works represented here are from the series ‘This Moment and Beyond’, based on primary drawings, sketches and doodles from her diary pages that she usually carries while travelling. The floating forms in monochrome are mistletoes of West Virginia, tomatillos from the fields of Spain and the sunflowers from the vast spans of Hyderabad countryside.
Trained at Kolkata and Hyderabad, young artist Samir Das strives to find multi-layered meanings in his minimal works. His works dealprimarily with the theme of migration, the idea of nationality, land, partition, language, religion, Diaspora and other allied issues. His abstracts negotiate with such themes with the help of vertical and horizontal strokes, the artist opt to internalise the source of his inspiration with a minimal visual representation. Samir’s works from the style on feature consists of drawings on paper following the layered weaving technique on the pictorial surface rendering bold and precise lines and neat geometric patterns.
Living and working in Hyderabad, Chandan Roy is primarily a landscape artist, creates panoramic views of water bodies, seascapes, mountains and places hovering between dreams and reality. He also does site-specific sculptural installations with natural and found objects where the panoramic setting finds parallel emphasis as his graphite works. His works highlight the issues of migration, nostalgia and memories of homeland and its relation with the dweller. There is something contemplative about the compositions, almost of languidness with an air of calm and serenity, which is what the artist seems to be nostalgic about the remembered landscapes.
Born and brought up in Bengal and trained at Govt. College of Art & Craft, Kolkata and S.N. School of Art, Hyderabad, Kaushik Bera’s works find inspiration from his birthplace, its material culture and primarily the continuing tradition of clay art. Having a childhood attachment with the readily available medium, Kaushik prefers to work with unfired clay for its temporality and ability to return to nature. Artisans and potters working in clay inspire him to expand his visual imagination. His sculptural works take on a variety of appearances – most of them are plain, textured with no definite suggestive form.
An alumna of S. N. School of Art and communication, Hyderabad, Tapatee Roy Chowdhury’s works are a testimony of experiences of her understanding of the outer and inner world. Represented here are mostly drawings in which a range of mundane subjects appear as witnesses of the passing days. Her subjects are not informed sitters but are painted or drawn from direct observation. They defy the set standards of portraiture.
